Dr. Manmohan Singh

Dr. Manmohan Singh is one such great leader who has never ceased to inspire people all around the world. The 14th Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh is probably the most honest and clean politician around.

Born in 1932 in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Manmohan Singh lost his mother while he was a very young boy. He was brought up by his grandfather to whom he was much attached. Manmohan Singh has always been a very determined and hardworking individual. He comes from a humble background. In spite of his village not having any access to electricity, a young Manmohan used to study diligently in the candlelight. After the Partition of India, he migrated to Punjab from where he pursued further studies and graduated from the Hindu College.

He has previously served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He was also the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India. He has also served as the Union Minister of Finance in1991 under the then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao.  Under his leadership as the Finance Minister, liberalization reforms were carried out in India in 1991. As a result of this, Licensing Raj system weakened in India which was a great factor in boosting the economy of India.

Dr. Singh was first elected to the Upper House of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, in 1991 and was again elected in 2001 and 2007. It is a well-known fact that Dr. Singh has always enjoyed massive popular support. This was mostly because of his image as a clean politician who has been unmarred by the taint of dirty politics and corruption that has run through many Indian administrations.

He is the first Indian Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to have won back power after completing a full five year term at the office. In 2010, TIME magazine named him among the 100 most influential people in the world.
