Bhagat Singh

Women's Dritish Open Golf Tournament Bhagat Singh was one of the most influential revolutionaries in India during the freedom struggle. Even today, Bhagat’s Singh’s name evokes great passion and patriotism from the people all around. He is often referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh for sacrificing his life for India’s independence. He was born to a Jat Sikh family who had earlier been associated with revolutionary activities with the British Raj in India.

Bhagat Singh had studied the European Revolutionary movements as a teenager and was attracted to anarchism and communism. Later on, he became involved in various revolutionary activities himself. He gained massive support when he underwent a 64-day fast in jail. He had done so to demand equal rights for Indian and British political prisoners. Apart from the revolutionary activities, he wrote for edited Urdu and Punjabi newspapers in Amritsar.

The turning point in Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary life was when Lala Lajpat Rai succumbed to his injuries because of lathi charge by the British police. Lala Lajpat Rai was a much respected leader and was leading a protest against non-inclusion of Indians in the Simon Commission. After his death, Bhagat Singh took a vow to avenge his death and along with some other revolutionaries made a plot to kill the police chief.

However, the plot got botched and the Deputy Policeman got shot instead. To avoid being caught, he shaved his beard and cut his hair and thus was able to elude police for some time. Shaheed Bhagat Singh is someone who would always remain in people’s hearts owing to his contribution in securing our independence. It’s a pity to think that such a bright star lost his life when was hardly 21 years old. “People come and people go but very few leave footprints in the sands of time”.
